Fukushima - Perception-Management, Critical-Thinking and Gnosis

I don't know all the complexities of how American media is covering/spinning this Japan Radiation Leak story, but here in the UK I'm seeing that it's business as usual.

There is a combination of contradictory reports, down-playing of facts, intelligent discussion consistently evaded by prefacing every other statement with ever-changing official statements, etc.

The spin is already laying its foundations to manage our perceptions of any future problems with this situation. For example, down-playing the fact that radiation levels in Tokyo are "10 times higher" than normal levels - by suggesting that normal is such a tiny amount that 10 times normal is a mere statistical quibble.  Even though the milk in Fukushima prefecture has been found to be contaminated with radiation, official sources claim it does not pose any ‘significant’ health threats.

Also, they are citing Chernobyl as a bench-mark of a 'bad' situation, and thus consistently distancing the Japan leak from this event.

The power of words.  It does not take a degree in nuclear physics to see that this is just as bad, if not worse, than Chernobyl.

What surprises me though is that many of the UK newscasters and reporters seemed genuinely on edge, angry, and deeply shocked - sometimes coming out with intelligent jibes at 'nuclear and political experts'.

It would be nice if this was evidence of a nascent perceptual maturity and not just a flash-in-the-pan, huh?  Alas, we see now that attempts at serious mainstream reporting seem to be falling drastically over the past few days.  Obviously, the new wrinkles in the Libya conflict seemed to have eclipsed the severity of the Japan situation.  Almost a week into this unprecedented disaster, the US and Britain declare military action against Libya under the pretext of protecting rebel forces. Muammar Muhammad el-Gaddafi is suddenly an intolerable presence on the global stage, which is curious considering the strange relationships allied forces have had with him in the past.

Fukushima is the "blessed island", etymologically speaking, or "the island of good fortune".  While that might be a dark irony considering current events in Japan, I feel that it is somewhat resonant with the Atlantis observations made in Chris Knowles’ Childhood’s End Exegesis post.

Also it's resonant with this Wikipedia quote about the Egyptian god Atum returning the earth to "watery chaos" at the end of the creative cycle:

"Atum's name is thought to be derived from the word 'tem' which means to complete or finish. Thus he has been interpreted as being the 'complete one' and also the finisher of the world, which he returns to watery chaos at the end of the creative cycle. As creator he was seen as the underlying substance of the world, the deities and all things being made of his flesh or alternatively being his ka."

It's very hard to speak insightfully on these events without appearing to sensationalise them, or scaring people. But these events ARE sensational, in that they assault the senses with powerful, uncomfortable data.   The term 'apocalyptic' has been used quite frequently in the media to describe the scope of the disaster - whilst on the surface attempting to down-play the ramifications of these events.

Look at the discursive space that has opened up; its parameters, taboos and speculations - not just in mainstream media but in alternative media also.  I find myself wondering how much to discuss with regards to these events; my intuitions and suspicions. I feel that other intuitives and creatives must be experiencing a similar thing right now.

Much of the world was watching the events that are still unfolding in the "blessed island" nuclear plant.  There is a creative potency in the psychic air now, though edged with fear and uncertainty - but those are often the most fertile circumstances for creating art.  And our conscious perception is definitely a form of art.

Will this art slowly darken and lose its truth-telling quality as the world gets ever more frightening, or will it expand and liberate us somehow? Where will this art of perception take us in the coming weeks, months and years?
Now, I have been following this whole situation since it first broke, as I'm sure many, many others have been doing. A lot of folks are very scared over this Quake/Tsunami/Fukushima event, and I would suggest that unfortunately their fear is not entirely unwarranted.  For those with eyes to see, this event is shaping up to be one of the worst disasters in modern history. The myriad factors involved means that it's very difficult to really process the severity of the situation.

Countless scores of people are dead and dying, made homeless, psychologically and socially shattered. They are quickly losing faith in their governments to give them accurate data - and the 'relief' operations, while much needed, could be considered purely cosmetic.

Food and water shortages, the threat of contamination and disease not just from radiation but also from sewage and chemical taints, and the prospect of decay from the thousands of bodies yet to be recovered - all of this converging at once, and its scope and ramifications, is surely unprecedented.

This is a huge humanitarian crisis, but I'm sure the sci-fi resonances are not lost on anybody here.

Do I agree with certain voices out there who suggest that a cover-up is already underway? Absolutely. The nuclear industry is a vast business, and like most billion-dollar industries, mercy is often hard to come by.   All that matters are bottom lines - EVERYTHING else is perception management, spin and plausible deniability.
We are witnessing a cover-up of huge proportions here, in my honest opinion, and over the next few days we will see the evolution of a disinformation and deniability campaign in all avenues of mainstream media.  Please do your own homework and keep current on the severity of this situation – because corporate instruments are not going to give you the unvarnished truth with regards to what is occurring.  This cover-up includes idiocy, passivity and lack of homework - as well as sinister agendas.

To assume that your governments and transnational corporations are lying to you is the most prudent, intelligent stance to take in these matters. I would suggest that the line between paranoia and critical-thinking is a subjective one. NONE of us are as well-informed as we think we are.

Instead of smugly amusing ourselves with the shrill tones of all the 'alarmists' and 'kooks' out there who suggest the sky is falling, we should look at a fact that is often hard to stomach, especially in times of such tragedy. The fact that human life matters VERY little to the oligarchs and sociopaths that run our worlds and allocate our resources.   This should be of serious concern to all of us, especially now.

For ANY official body to make absolutist pronouncements about issues of safety and harmfulness concerning explosions, partial core meltdowns, fires and radiation leaks - ONE WEEK INTO THE SITUATION - says more about perception-management than it does about reality and facts.  I would suggest that people take another discerning look at the data-sets presented to them through official channels. The facts and reality in them are hard to come by.

Let me spell it out for people. The data in regards to all this is supposed to be QUANTITATIVE, not qualitative. But instead we have emotive rhetoric, half-truths, and incredible logistical double-speak from official sources.  This is indicative of a body of data that is qualitative and spun all to hell.

This event should throw into relief our own critical-thinking processes, and the blind-spots and inaccuracies therein.  Truth be told, we know very little except that this event will continue to have profound import in the times ahead.
Now, I am not trying to push a particular interpretation to this situation, but I wanted to offer a quote from my Voices From the Fiction blog. It concerns 2012 mythology, or supposed revealing/awakening type events in our near future.  I felt it might be applicable here:

"Do you think there are individuals who may be affected by 2012 'awakening'-type events even if the majority are not? I mean, is there a middle-ground to this?"

[...]

Indeed, you are right to suspect that individuals will have mini-awakenings in their lives if they are open to them. Perhaps, if the people involved are sufficiently magnetic, they will allow others to catch glimpses of this different order of reality. This already happens all the time, on a global scale.

But here we run into the concept of the collective. And on a consciousness level the collective in your society is determined largely by mass-media. I use the term for all that is modern, sleek and commercial in your technological world.

So, if there is already a process of transformation occurring, it has not yet reached the conscious collective because of the power of this mass-media. But it is reaching them subconsciously and super-consciously all the time.

Perhaps then '2012' will be a process where the mass-media no longer transmits a trustworthy reflection of the world at large."

So, are we there yet? It's unfortunately quite possible that things could get much darker now, very quickly.  Are we going to address the disconnect between what we see, feel and intuit, and what we are being fed by the oracles of mass-media?  How toxic and fundamentally corrupt does a system have to be before enough people cannot abide it any longer?

From a Gnostic viewpoint, we must address our complicity in our own enslavement.  Here's the thing about Archons and gatekeepers (in all their guises) - if they have to they would rather kill you in your sleep, all things considered.  And if you continue to lumber around in your deceased state for a while, so be it.  Kill the spirit and the body will follow.  Or, kill intellectual activity and the mind will follow.

Or, as Cancer Man of The X Files once said, "The Child is Father to the Man."

It’s time to inject some realism into our thinking processes, because, as the Strangers of the movie Dark City are well aware - the clock is always ticking.

The Cusp - the Japan Tsunami, Empathy and the Sun - UPDATED

I do not wish to sound like a wannabe-prophet, doom-monger, or come across as someone trying to use the recent Japan horrors to promote a dark interpretation about humanity’s near-future. But in all honesty I see a very dark situation gathering pace all the time – and the recent Japan situation (with all its nuclear complexities) is just more proof of the unending brutality of this realm.

When the heart speaks, I try to listen.

Here’s a dark possibility that I think we should all seriously consider if not entirely endorse - Grandmother Terra doesn’t really like us, and we really don’t like her… to the point that we’ve figuratively allowed ourselves to become an insidious X Files-style black-oil consciousness with a huge death-fetish.

What if this self-destructive death-fetish isn’t entirely all our doing? Grandma has some awfully big teeth, as Japan, Chile, Haiti, Brazil, Australia and elsewhere all recently demonstrate. One could be forgiven for thinking that she might be a wolf in Grandma’s dress.

Don’t get me wrong, the Earth is majestic and beautiful and awe-inspiring – but it’s also petty and ugly and horrific. And I’m referring to nature itself here (non HAARP-influenced, straight-up Mama Nature), not man’s defilement of nature.

Hatian Boy, 2010

Now in 2011 we have Rebellions in the Middle East (whatever their actual origins are), global animal deaths (misinterpretations aside, though there will be many), Earth Changes (for want of a less New Age term), and the unacknowledged importance of the Sun in all these things.

Throw in real-time information sharing, laptop warriors and junkies and trolls, associative compartmentalization of all things Fringe, and you’ve got a seriously potent Molotov Cocktail.

From what I understand, the television show Fringe is exploring a convergence theme; the impossible convergence/intersecting of two parallel worlds - and the crazy things that happen due to this situation.

I see that over on The Alien Project blog Andre Heath mentions this Fringe exploration, applying it to current and recent events. While I disagree with various aspects of his reasoning, many of Heath’s posts are still interesting to me.

There may indeed be important truths connected to a convergence theme, but when I look at all this data I see a fork in the road, a separation, not a convergence – in hard-edged literal terms. A birth, for want of a better term, where one entity is created within another but must separate from its host in order to birth itself.

I only say this because we live in a system where violence and creation are closely intertwined…physics and geology and biology all attest to this. There is the possibility that humanity itself might have been birthed from some ancient cataclysm (spiritual or otherwise).

If there is some validity to this separation idea, then it makes me consider the image of the Archon. What would be the main imperative of an Archon with regards to the human race? Separation?

The Pythagoras Cage is one of my pet names for this Gnostic prison, as I feel that it implies a sinister mathematics to this realm; a hard-edged science of suffering. I see the predator/prey equation in much of our current understanding of physics and indeed in our daily experience.

Perhaps predator/prey is too imprecise a term to use – maybe ‘the violence of cause and effect’.

How many Leonard Shelby’s (of the film Memento) are wandering the Earth right now? How many resonances with Shelby am I carrying around in my own psyche (or any of us)? Is it simply the inhumanity of man against man and nature that constitutes the evolvement of this Gnostic Antichristos? Or is nature itself complicit?

Christos means anointed, right? And anointed means ‘to smear’. So, Antichristos is something ‘opposed to the smear’ or even ‘opposed to those who are smeared’, or even ‘opposed to those who CAN smear’. Is this interesting in a quantum mechanics wave/particle duality sense?

Is Christos (or Thomas Anderson, or John Murdoch) really the aspect of the psyche that is able to smear itself across space and time, thereby negating linear causality? Through the Looking-Glass, like Alice?  Walter Bishop of Fringe found a way to smear and connect two separate parallel earths, right? Neo of The Matrix did as well, and John Murdoch’s tuning ability in Dark City would be the holy grail of this ‘smear’ interpretation.

the smear...?

It’s interesting that ‘smear tests’ attempt to detect cervical cancer. Is the host going to survive this theoretical birthing process, or will she (and we) die in childbirth (or Childhood's End)?

Obviously, it’s US being born in all this violence and separation, but the question is, “Are we going to come to term as stillborns, or will our spiritual hearts keep beating?”

Obviously, I’m talking very broadly here and with very little certainty of what is actually occurring. We could use the metaphor of adult maturation instead of childbirth and the same thing applies.

In connection with my Anitchristos thoughts, it’s also interesting that ‘Anti’ was a ferryman entity who carried Isis to Set's dominion in some versions of Egyptian myth. Connections abound, and I’m not savvy enough to parse them all. But there they are.

Perhaps, figuratively speaking there is a simultaneous convergence AND separation occurring on Earth at this time. Perhaps the separation has been gathering pace ever since the Industrial Revolution, but the convergence is somehow trans-temporal, unable to be prophesied or quantified.

And yet the separation and the convergence are somehow spookily interconnected.

The nuclear radiation events occurring in Japan right now, due to the tsunami, are atomic in nature, right? Our manipulation of the atom, or the microcosmic sun.

From Wikipedia, about Atum:

"Atum's name is thought to be derived from the word 'tem' which means to complete or finish. Thus he has been interpreted as being the 'complete one' and also the finisher of the world, which he returns to watery chaos at the end of the creative cycle. As creator he was seen as the underlying substance of the world, the deities and all things being made of his flesh or alternatively being his ka."

I do not mean to take away from the breathtaking human tragedy of recent events - I only hope to offer compassionate insight or debate.  Just to be clear, I am not suggesting a full-on nuclear meltdown riff with the above Atum quote, only that all things are semiotically and associatively connected - and therefore spiritually connected.  Times they are a-changing.  It's frightening and disturbing, but hopefully maturing and sobering too.

I think it's interesting how our enhanced neural-net can operate due to the real-time sharing quality of the internet.  The internet theoretically gives us a highly sophisticated relationship with information, events, perspectives and interpretations - that no other generation prior to the late twentieth century has had.

It means something - as this quake and all its permutations clearly 'means' something to us.

To me, as an intuitive, life has to still be lived in the face of revelations, insights, dreams and pre-cognition - the world still hurts, it's still unfair, and the innocent suffer unimaginable tragedies.

The truth of this doesn't square easily with a metaphysical 'university earth' interpretation, IMHO. Cities and bodies crumble, the mind can forget profound psychic or experiential truths.

Linear time is utterly merciless, and imagination must give back compassion through art and story, trying to heal the wounds left in time's wake.  Tempus Fugit; we'll be understanding this more keenly in the years ahead, I feel.  Kronos eats his children, after all.

But we are all stronger than time or the brutality of 3D experience. The human heart is the figurative Vortex of Ages - the place where we can imagine a new physics, a new perception, which is inclusive rather than exclusive.
It's the only way we'll really figure out what the hell is going on with regards to humanity's past, present and future.

As an aside to this, those 2010 SOHO images of the Sun and its mysterious companions speak volumes. I'm not sure yet what those volumes are describing, but it’s mind-numbingly intense. I know that.
If those objects are not 'compression glitches', then they are not simply unknown companions of a star - the fact that they can even get so close to the star without burning up means that they have access to a physics and a knowledge that is beyond our understanding.
watching our Secret Sun?

For all intents and purposes they are Observers of the Secret Sun - a level of thermodynamic and cosmological knowledge that we can only imagine.

It's sad to say this, but I think there will be multitudes of people who will be determined to ignore the significance of the Japan tragedy, or any of the other recent tragedies.

Once the news stops covering the events and returns to its sacristy of celebrity news and pornographic trivia - these multitudes will follow.  The subtleties of all this and our place within it will be lost on them.

However, like 9/11 there will be a selection of people for whom these events will act as an accelerator pad for their conscious evolution - something in them will shift and suddenly they'll be more awake than they were previously.

These events and those that will follow have such far-reaching human implications.  I mean, there are people still displaced and desperate due to the Hurricane Katrina disaster (and the disgusting 'ineffectuality' of the US governmental response).

The same pattern can be found in the Indonesian tsunami event of 2004, in which apparently nearly a quarter of a million people perished.  The psychic dimension to that event still throbs with import and real-world effects six years later.

There are survivors all over the globe with tales to tell us that would stagger our imaginations, but generally speaking we don't seem to really give a shit.  Now, I understand the difficulty of processing such distressing events.  At a certain point the mind desires to look away, and occupy itself again with sex and drugs and rock & roll.  But the sex is just porn, the drugs are no good anymore, and the rock & roll has largely been replaced by a bloated imposter.

As Bobby Dylan once said, "You're gonna have to serve somebody.  It might be the Devil, or it might be the Lord, but you're gonna have to serve somebody."

Not really being the god-fearing type or the devil-loving type either, I think we need to work on serving each other.  We're all inmates together, in this Pythagoras Cage.  We need each other, because none of us are getting out of here alive.  That fact connects every one of the 6 billion souls who reside here.

Update:

I think like all manifest phenomena, Grandmother Terra has (at least) two faces.  One of her faces is the benevolent, nurturing grain-mother with nothing but love and hope for humanity.

But Terra's other face is the dark, destructive goddess with an ambivalent attitude to her stepchildren. This side to Terra is just as important to seriously consider (as recent events demonstrate).

One face does not cancel out the other.

In all this speculation we get into theories concerning humanity's possible influence of the magnetic/energetic field of the planet, through our emotional/spiritual states.  An idea suggesting that Terra's destructive aspect might in some way be tied to our own fractured psyches.

Again, all these descriptive terms and metaphors are just our collection of shorthands - figurative symbols through which each of us is trying to account for the things we experience and the insights we feel.

I suspect this is because our realm of existence is largely figurative in and of itself - in a truly infinite universe it could be no other way.

We are a race of stories dressed as men, and sometimes we mistake our clothes for our selves - any true shaman will tell you this, if pressed deeply enough.

Pathology of the Soul - or, 'A Realm of Imaginary Light'

Not wanting to be a cheerleader for victimhood, I appreciate that certain Gnostic concepts can seem simply too awful to contemplate with any seriousness or sobriety.  It’s a tough thing to seriously speculate that we might be trapped in a prison of near-unfathomable design.  The idea that what many think of as God is in fact a trickster demiurge (a sinister force, for want of a better term) that is utterly ruthless in its desire for full-spectrum domination – this idea is practically unpalatable due to the various horrors it implies.   I can understand the urge to balk at such an idea, and even to vilify its messengers – even if such an idea is presented as pure speculation, as it is here.
The idea of an Archon, or sinister gatekeeper to our apparent reality, is both frightening and alluring – in the sense that through such an image we can investigate our own darkest associations, with the potential to emerge as more compassionate, perceptive individuals.  But such shadow-projections do not necessarily invalidate the literal possibility of the Archon image. The rational mind might dismiss the Archon image as the symbolic embodiment of various fears and natural forces.  But, as in the microcosm world of insects and micro-organisms – our human intervention, manipulation and control would appear to them as the chaos of natural forces.  This is an important correlation to consider, I feel.
The idea of a predator that we cannot see, or even prove exists, is very, very frightening.  However, we shouldn’t let this sway us from intelligent speculation.
On Chris Knowles’ recent AstroGnostic Memento-Mirror-Matrix blog post over on the Secret Sun I left the following comment with regards to these themes, and I reference the movies 'Dark City' and 'The Matrix' (covered in previous posts here at Amid Night Suns).  Here is a slight abbreviation of my comment:

These last few posts have felt extremely powerful for me personally, and touched upon the core of my interests in a very synchronistic way.

I just wanted to say that I think these myths about ancient fairy-tale predators are deeply intertwined with our psyches.

I often compare and contrast horror or dark fantasy fiction with studies in abnormal psychology, because I think the insights gained are interesting.

I suspect that these fairytale predator stories are more than just our survival anxieties, or monstrous metaphors that encapsulate our basest fears - though this is definitely part of the phenomenon.  But there's something frighteningly literal here, IMHO.

I'm not sure if it's wise to make such a bold claim, especially since I think Psyche and its interconnectivity underpins all manifest experience.  However, these tales of Strangers, Archons, Agents, etc all seems to have an odd thematic consistency that feels weirdly significant to me.

I'm really not a good judge of these things though, since every damn thing feels weird to me.  But these sinister gatekeeper characters are lurking in various forms of fiction - but fiction is often the best place to tell an unbelievable truth.

With such an arena as a comfort-zone, perhaps the collective/creative mind can be a bit more honest or vivid in its output.

It's a tricky thing I'm trying to describe here.  You would probably agree that if genetic or collective memory exists, it might find arenas of fiction the most appropriate place to express its content. Especially if there is some trauma or distortion connected to it.

What I'm saying here is that I think there's an inherent paradox - these Stranger-Agent-Archons are fiction, but it's almost like we have to tell little untruths to reconnect with the powerful significance of such a memory/myth.

We have to dress it with our own scary outfits so that the details build up enough for us to recognise the soul of the thing - the memory allows us to remember the trauma but at a distance and with certain artistic licence.

Why does the soul of this thing have such power, even if it's purely symbolic? You follow me? Others have probably said this idea way better, and with fewer words, but I hope I'm understood.

I mean, let's not fuck around here - these archons and strangers and agent characters are rapists, right? They're ALL about control. Not only are they often physically defiling their prey, but their main goal/method of control is spiritual rape on a scale that is practically beyond our comprehension.

If there is any truth to Gnostic interpretations, literally or symbolically, then perhaps the boogieman in all his fictional incarnations is the closest that our collective memory will let us get to the actual rape that began our pathology.  And humanity has become a race of broken, pathological creatures.  All the violence and exploitation around us cannot imply otherwise.

Here's the crux of the matter though; in world of deep, deep interconnections, did we simply rape ourselves? My careful answer would be, "Not at first." With this as my honest opinion, I'm totally willing to consider a whole host of projection/metaphor/fantasy intricacies intertwined with such archon/predator characters - and am open-minded about the subtleties of their ontology.

The memory allows us to remember the trauma but at a distance and with certain artistic licence.

I think this artistic licence is not a place of hopelessness; it’s a place of power.  It means that even though there are distortions and horrors involved in truly understanding such a potent myth, these things can, through a strange circularity, eventually allow a fuller recognition of the thing.  I would suggest it is akin to catching a glimpse of something real behind a stylised depiction, remembering something once seen in a realm of imaginary light – some important, painful truth that we have carried with us in our private, psychic spaces for a very long time.

If such an interpretation has some truth to it, then this suggests that our art is our salvation.  Our art is our collection of elegant, truth-telling lies, misunderstandings and distortions – offered out to each other as authentic experiences of ourselves and our uncertainties.  A myth does not have to be real to be powerful.  But also, a myth does not have to be unreal to be powerful.  I suspect that humanity is both these things, both real and unreal – and we are very, very powerful.

Little Miss Sunshine - Or, "They're Stealing the Sun."

The indie movie Little Miss Sunshine has many resonances, only a few of which I’m going to briefly address here.  The story concerns the Hoover family, and their attempt to get little Olive to Redondo Beach, California in time for the ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ beauty pageant – in which Olive is desperate to take part.

The family faces many trials and tribulations on their way to the pageant. The father is a bitter ‘motivational speaker’ without many clients, the grandfather is a drug-taking but loveable grouch, and the mom is the underappreciated strength of the family holding everything together.  Along the way they are accompanied by Uncle Frank, a Proust scholar who recently attempted to commit suicide, and the willfully mute Nietzsche-reading son whose only dream is to fly jets (or get closer to the realm of spirit).

Each family member is trying to escape a world that they know is a prison, each in their own way.

There are many darker interpretations one could draw from this film, but in many ways the character of Olive is the kindest face of the sun itself; she is good-natured, humorous and loving – a source of life and joy for her family.  Here’s a Wikipedia quote on the mythological significance of Olives:

The leafy branches of the olive tree - the olive leaf as a symbol of abundance, glory and peace - were used to crown the victors of friendly games and bloody wars. As emblems of benediction and purification, they were also ritually offered to deities and powerful figures; some were even found in Tutankhamen's tomb.

Olive oil has long been considered sacred; it was used to anoint kings and athletes in ancient Greece. It was burnt in the sacred lamps of temples as well as being the "eternal flame" of the original Olympic Games. Victors in these games were crowned with its leaves. Today, it is still used in many religious ceremonies.

The olive tree and olive oil are mentioned seven times in the Quran, and the olive is praised as a precious fruit. In Chapter 24 Al-Nur: "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The metaphor of His Light is that of a niche in which is a lamp, the lamp inside a glass, the glass like a brilliant star, lit from a blessed tree, an olive, neither of the east nor of the west, its oil all but giving off light even if no fire touches it. Light upon Light. Allah guides to His Light whoever He wills and Allah makes metaphors for mankind and Allah has knowledge of all things." (Quran, 24:35)
So, the character of Olive in Little Miss Sunshine is resonant with anointment, eternal flames and brilliant stars lit from blessed trees.

When the family get to the children’s beauty pageant they find that these other little stars are disturbingly sexualized, child mannequins made to perform in the pageants by their bizarre parents.  All the children have fake hair and eyelashes, spray-on tans and are paraded around in swimwear.
In other words, these little stars have been co-opted, stolen and turned into commodities.
The family rails against this revelation by joining Olive onstage in an impromptu rendition of ‘Super-Freak’ that highlights the disturbing undercurrents of the pageant for all to see.   The judges are ‘disgusted’ with the family’s antics (but are completely fine with their own sexualisation of children).  Olive and her family escape the pageant and happily pile back into their yellow van to head home.
The judges and families of the Little Miss Sunshine pageant are like sinister Archons of the children’s supposed destinies, not-so-surreptitiously pimping them for their own bizarre reasons.
They are attempting to steal the sun, replacing it with a vacant, pseudo-pornographic imposter.  Luckily little Olive escapes this fate, as she and her family realize that the pageant is nothing more than a dark illusion.

Sunshine - Heart of Sol and the Soul

Passing through the portal of the Sun

The movie ‘Sunshine’ directed by Danny Boyle is another favorite of mine.  It’s a movie full of stunning imagery and Gnostic-inspired themes.  The movie follows the impossible quest of the crew of Icarus II, a spacecraft that is humanity’s last hope of reigniting a dying sun – by detonating an interstellar bomb within the heart of the star.   If they are unsuccessful, then all human life will eventually perish without the sun’s life-giving properties.  The stakes are about as high as you can get in this movie.

The designer of the bomb is the brilliant physicist Robert Capa, played by the ethereal Cillian Murphy.  The name Robert is Old German and can be translated as ‘bright fame’, or ‘bright renown’.  And the word Cāpa is a Sanskrit term for an arc of a circle.  So Robert Capa means ‘bright renown of the circle’s arc’.

Capa is the brilliant intelligence/identity of the sun itself.  He is the only one who truly understands the quantum mechanics of the bomb’s design.  It’s interesting that Capa has very strange and intense blue eyes.  Like the actor who plays him, there is something otherworldly about Capa.  He’s an outsider even to the rest of his crew.   He develops a romantic relationship with fellow crewmember Cassie, whose name means ‘she who entangles men’ and is a diminutive of Cassandra. This makes the character resonant with the cursed prophetess of Greek mythology, Cassandra, who was blessed with psychic sight that no-one believed.

Danny Boyle’s screenplay is full of resonance and carefully-chosen associations.  We could argue in this film that God/Sol/Light itself is dying.  Since this blog explores themes through a Gnostic prism, I would suggest that Sunshine is in fact a Solar Messiah narrative very much in keeping with Dark City, discussed in an earlier post.  Like John Murdoch of Dark City, Robert Capa must face trials, tribulations and sinister Archons in order to fulfill his destiny and achieve his apotheosis.

The sinister Archon in this narrative is Pinbacker, the Captain of the doomed Icarus I played by Mark Strong.  After many years alone on the ghost-ship Icarus I, far too close to the massive gravitational field of the sun, Pinbacker has been alchemically transformed into an entity that is no longer completely human – or bound by space and time in the strictest sense.  Many scenes in the movie highlight the strange spatial-temporal distortions given off by his transformed biology.  He is the Archon who has spent several years “talking to God” (or the demiurge), and has apparently been told that none of humanity are fit to continue living.  He would rather the sun dies, and tells Capa that God told him to take them all to Heaven.
While many people apparently saw the Pinbacker character as a serious flaw in the movie, ruining the authentic sci-fi mood by turning it into a mystical horror flick, I personally was delighted by this character and found Pinbacker to be the most enjoyable part of a very enjoyable film.  He reminded me of the character of ‘Kurtz’ in Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness (And to a lesser extent Marlon Brando’s Kurtz in Apocalypse Now).  Pinbacker is the Archon of his own empty kingdom, and when others step into it he acts in the most relentlessly brutal fashion.   It is implied that he has seen “the horror”, much like Kurtz in Heart of Darkness, and this has driven him insane.
This suggests, to me, that there are two faces of the sun – destroyer and creator.  Pinbacker looks and sees the sun’s destructive face, whilst Capa looks and beholds the face of the creator itself.

This is made incredibly explicit when Capa and Cassie ride the bomb down into the heart of the sun, along with the stowaway Pinbacker, and space-time starts to distort in powerful ways.  These distortions eventually allow Capa to stare into the face of creation itself, to commune with it and touch it when the sun bursts in to fill the bomb chamber, in a micro-moment that is distorted. For a holy moment Capa is not consumed by the sun, he is one with the sun.
Remember that Robert Capa means ‘bright renown of the circle’s arc’.  I’d wager that in this moment of enlightenment Capa realizes that he IS the sun.  He is within it, and it is within him.
To me, Pinbacker is the Archon who is determined not to let Capa come to this realization, but he ultimately fails.  Through Capa’s intelligence, intuition and hard work he essentially brings God back to life.  He becomes God, and it is then Capa’s light we see shining down on his sister back on Earth in the epilogue.
He is the Gnostic Solar Messiah who transcends the illusion of space and time, exactly as John Murdoch does in Dark City.  I’d also wager that the entire narrative of Sunshine is a mystery-play that takes place entirely within the imaginal realm of Capa’s psyche.  Each character is an aspect of himself.   It’s a journey to the Heart of the Soul, not just the Heart of Sol.

O Cyrus, Osiris and Sirius - The Path of Souls - UPDATED

The indie comedy/drama movie entitled ‘Cyrus’ features comedian Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly.  It’s a battle of wills between Hill’s character Cyrus and likeably burnt-out everyman John, played by Reilly.  The prize in this battle is the affections, attention and love of Cyrus’ mother, Molly, played by Marisa Tomei. Cyrus is a scarily intense, spoilt man-child who is doted on by his mother and with whom he shares a somewhat unconventional and perhaps overly-intimate relationship.  They are best friends, and Cyrus doesn’t appreciate Molly’s new lover John coming between them – and he’ll do anything to scare John away. The hilarious consequences ensue.

Ok, so bare with me. Here’s quote from Wikipedia on the origins of the name ‘Cyrus’:

The name's meaning is far-sighted; throne; sun. Kurus (Old Persian), Kurush (Old Persian), and Kyros (Old Greek) are older forms of Cyrus.  The name was borne by Cyrus the Great (-529 BC) who founded the Persian Empire; his mention in the Old Testament of the Bible as the king who freed the Jews has popularized the name among the Puritans.

The name is also suggested elsewhere to have originated from Old Greek, meaning ‘of the lord’. It can be interpreted as being derived from the element 'kyrios' which means lord. Kyros (Old Greek) is supposedly an old form of Cyrus. The name was associated with the Greek 'kyrios' by early Christians.

Ok, so then we have Cyrus’ mother, Molly.  It turns out that Molly is a diminutive of Mary.
From Wikipedia, about the name Mary:

The usual meaning given by various sources for the name is the Hebrew מרר m-r-r meaning "bitterness". Other meanings suggested include "rebelliousness" (מרי m-r-y), or "wished for child" or "Our Lady" (ש"ע מריה Sha Mrih) or "beloved lady", referring to the Christian reverence for the Virgin Mary. The website Behind the Name notes that the name could also be a name of Egyptian origin, perhaps from the word elements mry, meaning "beloved" or mr, meaning "love".  The name was also considered in the Middle Ages to be connected to the sea and the word mare, as in the term Stella Maris, or "star of the sea," an epithet for the Virgin Mary

In the movie Reilly’s John is an editor; he deals with language, shaping and manipulating the reality of texts.  In this sense we could argue he is a gatekeeper figure – or an Archon of the fictional narratives he maintains - resonant with the Book of Revelations supposedly written by John the Apostle.  And with regards to another famous John, of the Baptist variety, the Gospels depict him as proclaiming Christ's arrival.  In the Synoptic Gospels (Mark, Matthew, and Luke), Jesus is baptized by John.

There seems to be a theme I can just about sense here, but the question is, ‘Is it meaningful?’  Let’s explore this by taking a look at the Greatest Cyrus of them all.  Here’s a quote from Wikipedia about Cyrus the Great:
The ancient Greek historians Ctesias and Plutarch noted that Cyrus was named from Kuros, the Sun, a concept which has been interpreted as meaning "like the Sun" by noting its relation to the Persian noun for sun, khor, while using -vash as a suffix of likeness.  […]Rüdiger Schmitt of the Encyclopædia Iranica have suggested a translation based on the meaning of an Indo-European-root "to humiliate" and accordingly "Cyrus" means "humiliator of the enemy in verbal contest.”  The Elamite form of the name, "Kurash", is interpreted as one who "bestows care".  In the Bible, he is known as Koresh (Hebrew: כורש‎).

Koresh?  Shades of Waco and another culturally-symbolic figure unwilling to surrender.  Is there meaning to be teased or intuited here?  What are we sensing beneath the surface?
Another Wiki quote on Cyrus’ exploits:
After taking Babylon, Cyrus the Great proclaimed himself "king of Babylon, king of Sumer and Akkad, king of the four corners of the world" in the famous Cyrus cylinder, an inscription deposited in the foundations of the Esagila temple dedicated to the chief Babylonian god, Marduk. The text of the cylinder denounces Nabonidus as impious and portrays the victorious Cyrus pleasing the god Marduk.
Marduk – God of Light.
O Cyrus, O Cyrus! The God of Light favors thee! (for example)

So...this might be a good time to mention Sirius, a bright star and the subject of numerous posts over on Chris Knowles’ Secret Sun blog.  Here’s a quote that mentions O Cyrus and Sirius and their connection:

The most commonly used proper name of this star comes from the Latin Sīrius, from the Ancient Greek Σείριος (Seirios, "glowing" or "scorcher"),although the Greek word itself may have been imported from elsewhere before the Archaic period, one authority suggesting a link with the Egyptian god Osiris.

Now, that’s interesting considering that earlier we saw that the name Cyrus means ‘Lord’, or ‘far-sighted, throne, sun’.  Strange connections we’re seeing here.

Backing this resonance up, in Arabic Sirius is known as: الشِّعْرَى (transliteration: aš-ši‘rā or ash-shira; the leader), from which the alternate name Aschere derives. In Sanskrit it's called Mrgavyadha "deer hunter", or Lubdhaka "hunter".  Many cultures have attached significance to Sirius, particularly in its connection to dogs. It’s often called the "Dog Star" as the brightest star of Canis Major, the "Great Dog" constellation.  Visit Chris Knowles' blog for stunning explorations of the Sirius question.

From Wikipedia, on Sirius’ dog-like qualities:
In Chinese astronomy the star is known as the star of the "celestial wolf" […] The Cherokee paired Sirius with Antares as a dog-star guardian of either end of the "Path of Souls". The Pawnee of Nebraska had several associations; the Wolf (Skidi) tribe knew it as the "Wolf Star", while other branches knew it as the "Coyote Star". Further north, the Alaskan Inuit of the Bering Strait called it "Moon Dog".”
Is Sirius a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and if so – what kind of wolf?  What interconnected meanings are hidden in all this?  What can we learn about ourselves?  Is something guarding the promised land of consciousness, are we all Israelites awaiting deliverance from some sinister, unfathomable corruption?  A Path of SoulsIs the Star of the Sea being compromised by things that remain just beyond our perception – much like the subtext of this post?

Osiris, who are you?

Update: Making Waves commented on the synchronicity between Molly being a diminutive of Mary, Star of the Sea (Stella Maris), and the actress who plays her being called Marisa - meaning 'of the sea'.

I'm certain that the character names and the actors real names are often factored in to the huge magical working that is movie-making.  Also pointed out by Making Waves; the resonance between the most famous J.C. - Jesus Christ, and the actor J.C. Reilly.  Interesting in light of the fact that there are those who believe that Jesus took Mary Magdalene as a lover/wife.

Also in light of the fact that that the ancient dying/reborn sun gods often had a consort/queen who was both their mother (or sister) and their lover simultaneously.  With regards to Osiris, he is often depticted as being both the son and brother/husband of Isis.  An interesting circularity in light of the Mother Mary/Lover Mary resonance we find with Christ.

Connections abound.

The X Files, Gnosticism and Disclosure

In the spirit of the legendary The X Files television series, I’d like to pose a concept – What if we humans are the Colonists, re-colonising or reimagining the Gnostic prison, tentatively feeling for any spaces that might lie beyond it?  What if the black-oil of the X-mythology could be figured as INSIGHT, an insight suffused with knowledge of the underworld?  After all, the show is about many themes; including the connections between the Seen and Unseen worlds.

A Shadow, not a Demon
I’ve often thought that the collected investigations of these two renegade, maverick FBI Agents (brought into our realm as a mere work of televised fiction) is a body of information with untold resonances – for conspiracy research, metaphysics, art, communication, perception and disclosure.  Now, if I were a warm-and-fuzzy benevolent kind of alien, maybe I'd want a quiet and intimate kind of contact/disclosure beyond the full reach of the sociopathic elites.  On the other hand, if I were a malevolent/black-oil kind of alien intent on infecting and possessing the entire visible universe - then maybe I'd want a slow infiltration of the power structures (or an alliance with such like-minded sociopaths) followed by a massive show of force and spectacle to soothe my twisted ego.

Who knows?  I don't, but I think the truth is even stranger than the previously outlined dialectic suggests. Why can't an 'alien' race have shades of grey in its psychological makeup? There are so many competing factions, ideologies and agendas in the human race - why would it necessarily be any different for something far greater than us?

A truly alien intelligence that was interacting with humankind - it wouldn't immediately mean they had a unity of purpose, would it? I'm the kind of guy who likes the idea of 'unity' through multiplicity, not unity through conformity and hegemony.

We would do well to trust our intuitions and try to align them with real open-mindedness and genuine critical-thinking. I suspect the actuality of what is occurring on this planet and in this star-system is far beyond our current ability to conceptualise and comprehend.  I'd also wager that the Imagination/Creative Mind (whatever that incredible potency turns out to 'actually' be) is somehow intimately involved in all this, blurring the lines between the real and unreal, the seen and unseen. At least, such an idea simultaneously jazzes me and creeps me out, which is why I try to fully explore it.  I think Fox Mulder would explore such a possibility.

the possibilities...

And what about all the Project Blue-beam rumours?  Personally, I find it hard to conceive that a faked blue-beam alien invasion scenario could actually occur. Also, the aliens-as-demons meme also feels a little too much like elitist, imperialist propaganda.  I have no trouble entertaining the possibility that there are entities existing that might be termed 'demons' or daemons, but I think such entities would exist, like humans, in a many-shades-of-grey kind of spectrum - not evil beings sent by Satan to corrupt the creation of the Christian Authority. I also have no problem entertaining the notion that if extraterrestrial races are currently engaged with this world then some of them may have indeed been mistaken for demons in the past, or knowingly promoted themselves as such.

Without getting into the endless debate about the possible existence of Reptilian aliens and the like, I think anyone with an open mind must at least concede the possibility that if aliens DO exist then they may have had influence over the course of human history, most likely for both malign and benevolent reasons. If some faction of an off-world society IS manipulating human consciousness for nefarious ends, then to call such a being a demon holds a little more resonance - further still if that faction has the ability to manipulate space-time and has something inter-dimensional in its nature. In that case, I can see the temptation to figure such entities as demons in a kind of mytho-poetic way. But this is emotional and psychological shorthand and not the same thing as the dogmatic, literalist ideologies that the elites are CONSTANTLY pushing. If the ufo-as-demonic meme is gaining currency right now it is probably because the elites are using it somehow, through the feedback loop of human consciousness, for some unforeseen advantage. These things always have roots in the very real and tangible, not the absurdist garbage they use as psy-ops every day of our lives. I'd posit that there IS a war of the 'gods' occurring right now, but while we indulge in alien navel-gazing and nonsensical theories and infighting, the real advantages are constantly being cultivated and the rug of freedom is slowly being pulled from under our feet.

There is an entheogenic/consciousness/alien-identity theme that runs through so much of the X Files mythology, and it is particularly fascinating. I've always been well aware of it, but Chris Knowles’ work on the Secret Sun blog helped elucidate so much of my thinking regarding these themes.

To me it appears that entheogenic narratives usually involve liberation and transgression from imprisoning forms, but it seems that expansion of consciousness is always the primary function of these stories. Any theorising about spiritual prisons, archons and demiurges seems to come later, at least narratively speaking.

I often toy with the idea that it is the destiny of each individual consciousness to eventually BECOME the stories that they love. This was definitely true for Fox Mulder. He started off as an intuitive obsessed with aliens and magic, he then morphed into a powerful psychic (or a magician who's prime skill was mytho-poetic association) with incredibly accurate hunches, eventually becoming an alien god.

I used to think of Cancer Man as analogous to Milton's Satan in Paradise Lost, somehow standing against the demiurge's tyrannical kingdom. This was perhaps admittedly a lenient view of Cigarette Smoking Man, but by the end of the series it's made clear that CSM is what he appeared to be all along - a creepy, cowardly old fossil - and it's Mulder who more resonates with Milton's Satan. Mulder is now Lucifer, the lightbearer - the alien god with the Truth literally INSIDE him.

The Truth Inside

I hope Christians don't misinterpret my meaning there; I'm just speaking figuratively. To me it's interesting that little William was conceived around the time of Mulder's godhood.  I was always amused by how David Duchovny played Mulder in the later years. Mulder seemed to have a more impish yet bemused conviviality in the latter seasons, almost as if he was fully aware that he was the lead (Osiris resonant) character in an epic mystical narrative called The X Files.  We could argue that the actor was bored with the character, which might be true, but I suspect that Duchovny was still trying to portray a convincing rendition of an alien-man-god with a quirky sense of humour.

If the almost reptilian Greys of the X-myth, with their black-oil consciousness, are analogous to the Archons and the Demiurge of Gnostic literature – then Cassandra Spender's comment about them taking over the universe (taken over?) through Purity has far more resonance. Purity. Purity Control. It sounds like something is trying to contain consciousness and knowledge/freedom at its most fundamental genetic-meme level. To me at least, that's about as Astro-Gnostic as you can get.

Is there an extraterrestrial disclosure event looming on the global horizon?  All I can do to answer this is to suggest that I think disclosure has been happening for a while now. The X Files WAS disclosure; it was (and still is) part of the irresistible, magical force that is at the heart of all perception. We humans (and our various forms of art) ARE disclosure because, I suspect, we have all the secrets locked within our DNA and our psyche's. A few years here or there, or 2012, or even 50 years from now - those predictions are totally beside the point. To me disclosure isn't really about an announcement from global authority figures, though that surely might be part of it; it's about a changing reality/consciousness that will become harder and harder to deny. If we really have such an irresistible force flowing through our veins, hearts and minds, then eventually disclosure WILL happen. Do I think it'll happen before the mythical 2012? I don't know. Do I think it'll even happen in our lifetimes? You know, based on my own intuitions, I wouldn't discount it as a real possibility.

Though as a caveat I would suggest musing on the idea that a truly intelligent/spiritual race would be hesitant to contact us. At the risk of sounding insanely paranoid, I believe we are living in exceptionally dark times.

We are a broken, fractured race full of bloodlust and inequity - the how and the why is up for debate - but if we can't sort out our own shit then looking to the skies will do us little good. I don't believe in an instant alien solution to a thousands-of-years-history of perpetual genocide and wilful sublimation of freedom. I think the truth (or evolution) is hard work and starts or ends right inside our minds.
Ultimately I think 'Disclosure' is like a gold coin in the clenched, greedy hammer-fist of a sociopath. He isn’t giving it up easily, and if you underestimate him, you'll see how freakin’ fast he'll lash out at you for daring to pry his hand open.

I'd even go so far as to say disclosure is also a piece of the philosopher's stone in the clenched, greedy hammer-fist of a very twisted alchemist. He's gonna dig your eyes out of your face and attempt to curse you, misdirect you, maim you or kill you - before he EVER lets go of his prize. That guy is way more dysfunctional, and therefore fallible, than we usually recognise.

Let’s stop imagining this nutcase as supremely scary and omnipotent, or that he would EVER decide to tell us the unvarnished truth. He won't. We are not alone, but we're all alone together in this.  The truth will out, in the end.  The Irresistible Force is too powerful.  But there could be a lot of suffering in the interim.

So, we need to gather our remaining resources, trust out intuitions and our ability to think critically.  We can then come back to tell this dude that we've got our own stone, and that he's been outsourced, rendered fucking obsolete.

“The Truth will come to you, as it’s come to me – faster than the speed of light.”
