The Sub-Verses: Book Eight: Midnight's Angel

"Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world – he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him."

              Revelation 12: 7-9

At Amid Night Suns I try to express to my readers my conviction in the awesome transformative power of stories, legends and mythology.  It is my belief that storytelling is the most ancient and powerful form of magic in the Universe.  Furthermore, it is my belief that all sentient beings existing in various realms use storytelling to negotiate with their environments - and to imagine and comprehend their identities.  In our world we are seemingly bound by the structures of Time and Space; a continuum that necessitates that our stories be linear - but perhaps there are other realms unbound by our physics, in which stories are non-linear, multidimensional gestalts.  The entities who dwell there would tell stories that would appear paradoxical, dreamlike and alien to our human comprehension - but they would be stories nonetheless.  

Is it possible that storytelling is far more than a strange blending of lies and truth?  Is it indeed possible that storytelling is the Prophet's Window, a mirror in which we can gaze at the true majesty of the raw infinite?  In the western world our advances in Quantum Physics are slowly giving us a better grasp of the mysterious, mercurial nature of apparent three-dimensional space-time.  We are beginning to understand (or finally remember) that Light is both a wave AND a particle, that all levels of creation appear to be in constant communication because of this phenomenon of non-locality.  Many scientists seem to fear the beginnings of this new Gnosis, and attempt to gloss over or utterly ignore the mystical implications of such knowledge.  We have tried to hide this spark of divine light within complex theoretical mathematics, but like a hall of mirrors our mathematics seems to bend and continually return to the mysteries that exist at its center.  Indeed, aren't mathematics and physics just forms of numerical and empirical storytelling?

I say again, storytelling is the most ancient and powerful form of magic in the known Universe.  Indeed, it is the Source of All Things.  Wiser men than I have stated throughout human history that, "Storytelling is evidence of God in motion."

The War in Heaven that our mythologies speak about is a powerful story, with lots to teach us.  There are many versions of it, told differently in different cultures.  All of these stories are lies, and all of these stories are true.  This might seem too relativistic to those unfamiliar with magic, but you must understand that YOU are the integral mechanism in this perception/experience engine.  Hear this: Because you exist, because you live and dream and perceive - some stories will be truer than others, for you and your kin.  But you can still learn and enrich yourselves from those stories that you deem to be untrue. You must never forget this.  Forgetting this is how the War in Heaven is how horror and violence and colonization comes to a realm, living in the hearts of its denizens.  Each sentient being in all of creation is a crossroads, a meeting place of many paths and many stories.  This crossroads IS the act of storytelling, it is consciousness itself; the reflected light of the mind of God.  Every sentient being is a part of this Light; a self-aware crossroads of creative tension.

You are alive now.  And even after your death, so shall you be alive for evermore.  Death is not merely a Reaper; Death is the alchemical transformation of one kind of storytelling into another.  This is the power and the responsibility of the Prophet's Window.  To forget your storytelling is to forget that you exist at all.  Dear reader, don't let this happen.  The most ancient magic pounds in your heart...the love and imagination that the creator has bestowed upon you.  This Earth has not been forsaken, and neither have you.  This is not my wisdom, not Raj's wisdom, the belief of a fallible mortal man - this is the wisdom of Midnight's Angel.

The Kiss Between Heaven and Earth

At Amid Night Suns I work very hard to write posts and create videos that are provocative, intelligent and empowering.  But we all have our off days, days when we feel tired, uninspired or shaken by some new horror that presents itself.  During times like these I remind myself that, despite my variety of personal struggles, I still have passion and love in my life.  I know what it means to be a hungry, yearning, dreaming individual.  I know what it means to have red hot blood flowing through my veins - I understand the power and also the responsibility that comes with that.  And I realize that anywhere worth going will take hard work, patience and persistence.  A reality can only come after a fantasy.  An accomplishment can only come after a powerful dream.  

As an artist and writer by desire and not by success, I know that creation is one of the most holy acts that a sentient being can perform, whether it is the miracle of a painting, or novel, or the very act of childbirth itself. Creation is sacred, and anyone who tries to convince you otherwise is either a liar or a fool.  Creation is not simply about the establishment of an artifact, or making the figurative literal - it is so much more than that.  It is the meeting place between Heaven and Earth.  We live in a world in which unseen realms impinge on our reality.  We live within an infinitely complex consciousness; multiplicities of time and space, sharing this mysterious eternal moment with countless unknown intelligences.  This might seem heretical or blasphemous to some, but the place where Heaven and Earth kiss is immanent, all-pervasive - even in a world such as ours that seems to be controlled by merciless Archonic forces.

When we can truly understand this exquisite kiss between the Seen and Unseen, then our eyes become as God's eyes, our hands become as God's hands, and our love becomes as God's love.  Because the Creator, who goes by many names and shows itself to us in many forms, IS this exquisite kiss.  And as every single one of us knows in our heart of hearts, God really does love us - and that is why we were gifted with Free Will.  But this most awesome of superpowers is not simply the ability to move through the visible world, but the invisible world also.  Moreover, Free Will is the ability to dream - to survive through fantasy as well as fact - and the ability to achieve the impossible.  Dear reader, never lose faith in the essential majesty of your consciousness - and know that if you are diligent you can feel passion even in your exhaustion, you can see even when you are in darkness, and you can hear the whispers of friends fortifying you even in the deepest silence.

In Potentia

This post was inspired by two excellent essays; one entitled Prometheus, Saturn and the return of the Golden Age - over on a blog called Starsyncs, and the other entitled Wizards, Workings and Walk-Ins: The Ultimate Lifeform on the exemplary Secret Sun.

From Tracy Twyman's essay Regnum in Potentia: Saturn's Kingdom Transformed Into the Golden Age, from which the Starsyncs essay also quotes:

...there is a moral dilemma implied in the story of Chronos/Saturn. Saturn is associated with liberty, and a Golden Age of peaceful anarchy. Yet we know that in order to maintain this form of rule, he killed his own children to prevent them from growing up to overtake him. The only reason the Golden Age was so golden was because Saturn’s children were paying the price of the sacrifice. . . . What these myths of the Golden Age, Garden of Eden, and other primordial paradises really point to is the concept of a cosmic center: a kingdom that doesn’t really exist, except in the Otherworld, in potentia. But it is said to be at the heart of our own existence, and its essence can be felt everywhere. It is a place where there is no time as we know it. Rather, all points of time exist simultaneously, and all space as well. This is why the people who live there are said to never grow old.
And from Christopher Loring Knowles' Secret Sun post, when discussing the possibility of sentient plasma-based lifeforms:

 ...I'm fascinated by the fact that many skeptics will acknowledge that these fireballs exist and may indeed have a powerful effect on human consciousness.The difference being is that skeptics believe it's all some kind of fluke-- some big ol' misunderstanding, you understand-- while a considerable body of thinking in the alt.UFOlogy world sees these beings as sentient, perhaps interdimensional life forms of almost unimaginable power and influence. 

At Amid Night Suns we are extremely interested in the literal and figurative complexities of Darkness and Light, and their curious interrelationship.  It is our belief that, as a bard once said, there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in our philosophies...

The Sub-Verses: Book Seven: Designing a Key

If there is any literal truth to the Gnostic concept that humanity is somehow imprisoned in a realm of illusion by unknowable Archonic forces, then the concept might seem a disturbing and almost unpalatable one to consider.  However, we needn't accept this idea as literal truth in order to garner insight and symbolic resonance from it.  It should be plain to anyone with open eyes that our world is heavily controlled and compromised even at our apparently three-dimensional level of reality.  A global corporate plutocracy is attempting to dwindle the last few remaining human freedoms to ensure its dominion.  This is simply a fact.  We can argue the details - but the reality we're faced with remains the same.  This collection of infighting oligarch factions could be figured as the brutal squabbles of  competing organised-crime syndicates, where we are the sacrificial pawns on their chessboard of dominion.

We are consistently told and suggested that the human race is brutal, chaotic and hungry for power.  Why is it that the instruments of mainstream media consistently imply or allude to this very dark view of humanity and the apparent futility of spiritual 'evolution'?  While it is indeed true that human history is filled with tales of ignorance, horror and war - it is also filled with the most beautiful forms of art, and the most stunning and compassionate acts of heroism.  But these brighter aspects of ourselves are only highlighted in the most superficial way wherever the elites are concerned - usually to promote some agenda that is the antithesis of the heroism being discussed.  My point here is that, at the risk of sounding unfashionably New Age, it seems that the power-hungry elites of this Earth wish to keep us in an exceptionally low vibrational state.  It seems that this kind of heavy, cynical, despairing view of ourselves as a collective is the most expedient way for the elites to consolidate their power and fragment us into mutually hateful cliques who will never be able to organise ourselves against them in any real powerful, mobilized way.  And they use their corporate media mouthpieces to this end.

Well, I don't subscribe to the idea that all hope is lost, or that the collective spiritual uplift of humanity is a silly pipe-dream.  I believe in the power of the Imagination above all else - because it is from the imagination that art, love, friendship and Gnosis all come from.  You might disagree with me here and say, "No, knowledge is empirical, testable and falsifiable.  It has nothing to do with imagination."

I would humbly disagree.  Our language and modes of communication stem from our ability to imagine.  Everything must be imagined to one degree or another before it can be known or contextualized, or falsified.  In my view, Reason and Imagination are seemingly-opposed aspects of the same fundamental continuum.

In my world, I try to add nuance and interest to the things I'm passionate about.  In my world I call it as I see it, and I'm not afraid to speak my truth or be aggressive in defending my truth, or defending my friends and loved ones.

As I've stated before on Amid Night Suns, the work I do here is never intended to be glib, or merely sensational, or a promotion of violence.  I have a somewhat Gothic sensibility and am drawn to darker themes in the art I enjoy, and so the dark aesthetic of my own art will reflect that.  But what I am trying to promote here is empowerment, fearlessness and lucidity above all else.  Ultimately, as adult humans we are all responsible for what we think and feel and how we behave.  The moment we give that profound power away, unconsciously or otherwise -- that's when other forces can intervene and start thinking, feeling and making choices on our behalf, using our names to do so.

If the world seems unbearably dark to you; an Archonic prison-realm in which our potentials have been hidden from us, then you must set about designing a key.  If we cannot literally escape this compromised existence, then we must clear and defend a sacred psychic space at the center of ourselves, and defend it with every ounce of strength we have.  In this place of internal sanctum we can then set about trying to divine the nature of the locks that we perceive all around us, and how to craft a secret master-key that could some day potentially unlock everything.  This incredible task will require Reason and Imagination working in concert; a belief that sometimes, if our intent is pure and true, the Impossible can become Possible.

Shall Not Perish

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.  
It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

The Sub-Verses: Book Six: Forbidden

The elites of this world seem interested in cultivating ever-increasing extremes of thought and action among the population.  We seem to live in a world in which extremism is encouraged and promoted, in subtle and not so subtle ways.  But it is only a certain brand of extremism that is overtly and covertly being promoted - an unconscious, unthinking extremism that has no regard for context or psychological well-being.  Everywhere you look the elites are spending huge amounts of money to promote ideologies, practices and sanctions that encourage hateful, mistrustful, fear-based reactions in the population.  In the media, a nihilistic, mercenary mindset is being presented to us as the height of chic and sexiness.  In politics the Left and Right continue to endorse militaristic, religiously-inspired conflict whilst claiming they are champions of freedom and democracy.

This obviously feeds into the fetishistic consumerism and rabid corporatism that is so endemic in our culture right now:  "Don't think, don't muse, don't ask questions - just be aggressive, cynical and secretly amoral whilst keeping up appearances and spending lots of money. It's a horrific, hollow suicide we're selling you, but damn, it's kind of hot..."  This kind of pathological extremism at the level of media serves to blind the population to the extremism occurring at the level of government.  And even if some retain their sight in the onslaught, the idea is to make them increasingly apathetic to it.  But their essential endgame is the creation of an Id-based consciousness for the general population.  A consciousness that might pay lip-service to critical-thought and lucidity, but is actually just a chaos of darkened instincts and impulses.

From Sigmund Freud's New Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis:

It is the dark, inaccessible part of our personality, what little we know of it we have learned from our study of the dreamwork and of the construction of neurotic symptoms, and most of that is of a negative character and can be described only as a contrast to the ego. We approach the id with analogies: we call it a chaos, a cauldron full of seething excitations... It is filled with energy reaching it from the instincts, but it has no organization, produces no collective will, but only a striving to bring about the satisfaction of the instinctual needs subject to the observance of the pleasure principle [...] contrary impulses exist side by side, without cancelling each other out....There is nothing in the id that could be compared with negation...nothing in the id which corresponds to the idea of time.

While I don't agree with every detail in Freud's thesis, and see fundamental flaws in his thinking, I acknowledge that his work contains a lot of interesting, usable concepts when tempered with other views and perspectives.

In a world where pathological greed, domination and an obsession with surfaces is sold as subversive and somehow counter-culturally 'cool', the discerning individuals who remain need to question what is truly subversive in this sleight-of-hand magic trick that the elites are attempting to pull.  What is really forbidden, as far as the elites perceive us poor, ignorant rubes?  What are they actually trying to withhold from us, and why?  As I've stated before on Amid Night Suns, I believe a combination of imagination, intellect and rigor are the true forbidden fruits that the elites are trying to stop us from accessing, through various forms of subterfuge.  This is a War of the Imagination, a war for the control of our minds - and primarily our abilities to engage in symbolic, comparative analysis.  This seems to be a powerful motive for the media bombardment we are subjected to every endless supply of multicolored swill. A sociopathic control-freak's wet dream; a horde of abuse-ready playthings, each wave younger and more vulnerable than the last.

What can we do to combat this nightmare scenario that is unfolding in real-time?  Again, we must turn to each other.  We must unite our imagination, intellect and desire to ask difficult, interesting questions.  We must build little networks of mutually-supportive Seekers wherever we can.  We must let our work and art and behavior speak for itself, and we must never lower ourselves to the level of our oppressors.  We must never be easy prey for them.  

We are not allowed to see the men behind the curtain, so we we must draw the curtain back.  We are not supposed to be imaginative, savvy and compassionate, so we must raise our game in each of those respects.  We are forbidden from truly peering into the unseen realms of the universe and our very own psyches, and so we must look intensely, with steadfast, eager eyes.  If you seek Truth, and not a pacifying, apathetic simulation of it, then you need to realize that you are already an outlaw, in the best possible sense.  Let this empower you, and offer the world a different kind of extremism - one based in Love, Insight, Rigor and a ferocious appreciation for context, subtlety and nuance.  This is what our oppressors fear most of all.

In ancient Egypt, Heliopolis was the City of the Sun, the Eye of the Sun, and the Place of Pillars.  The city's title comes from the mythological Greek name for the personification of the sun.  Originally it was a place for the veneration of Atum; the Complete One, and Finisher of the World.  Later in Egypt's history it became a site for the worship of many blended deities, including Atum-Ra.

The sun god Ra was believed to have called all forms of life into existence by speaking their secret names.  He traveled the day-heavens in the Mandjet - the Boat of Millions of Years, and used the Mesektet, or Night-boat, for his sojourns through the night-heavens.  Each night Ra would do battle with Apep, or Apophis; the huge serpent of chaos that would attempt to devour the sun, or stop it in its tracks with its powerful gaze.  But the Mesektet, or night-boat, would carry Ra eastward through the vast, dark underworld in preparation for his rebirth the next morning.

Heliopolis was a place of ancient, powerful magic.  Now, as then, the place is steeped in legend and mystery.  The City of the Sun was a place that held a multitude of incredible secrets, most of them lost to us now.  But it was more than a city.  It was an eye, an aperture, a gateway.

Here is a secret.  The legacies of Heliopolis are still felt in the unseen realms, in the hidden, imaginal worlds, as well as in the literal physical places that remain just beyond the veil of our perception.  Indeed, the City of the Sun was considered the Gateway of Veils to its highest initiates.  Although cosmologies, politics and alliances all changed as history took its toll, the true citizens of Helios tried to guard its secrets and protect its essential wisdom.  This wisdom is still alive today.  This wisdom concerns the spiritual and physical origins of humanity - where we came from, where we are going, and why we are here.  It concerns knowledge of our hidden friends, our hidden enemies, and the magnificent, almost unimaginable destiny that awaits each one of us.  This is a sacred secret, reserved not for a select priest-class or royal elite, but for every sentient human life who can comprehend its nuances.  This secret must be shared now...right now, as humanity draws inexorably closer to the Crossroads.  You are not merely a creature of flesh, you are a creature of Light.  You are a native, amnesiac denizen of the City of the Sun.  Do you realize what this implies?  The magic is not dead.
