I have suffered through a lot of emotional pain and heartache in my life, as I'm sure most of my readers have too. I try to make this heartache count for something by channeling it into the work I do here at Amid Night Suns. I would hope when you read my posts and watch my videos you can feel that my intentions are pure and my desire for insight, freedom and compassion is earnest. The human race is suffering right now. We have always suffered, but to me it seems more so now than ever. As someone who takes the ideas of Gnosticism very seriously, I am always searching for reasons for this suffering. I am all too aware that on one level at least we are made to suffer -- by the elites and oppressors who consider themselves our masters. But in a larger metaphysical sense all seekers are faced with the most pertinent and brutal of questions: Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do those with nothing but compassion and love in their hearts suffer the most ill fortune? These are spiritual questions we cannot easily answer. Faced with these questions, and the sadness they kindle within us, it is tempting to believe that the universe is nothing but a mindless, uncaring chaos. But this is only a partial truth. There are unseen realms sharing time and space with us, and there are benevolent spiritual forces inhabiting these realms -- forces that guide and watch over us...forces that lift us up when we are down.
Sometimes, as an Intuitive, it can feel like you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. To sometimes sense things before they happen can be a source of excitement and profundity, but it can also be a source of great and continual grief. I suppose all artists who take their craft seriously have experienced some measure of these feelings. When faced with such a depth of sadness at the state of human affairs, what is to be done? Do we simply give in to the heartache? Or do we try yet again to craft meaning and resonance from the things we experience? Pain, whether emotional or physical, is one of the things that binds us. We all have secret, hidden places of grief -- depths within our souls that make us tremble with vulnerability; depths that make us weep. Usually we share these depths only with our most trusted loved ones, if at all.
But carrying such burdens can be a source of great strength. They can teach us humility and connection. They can help us to reach out that much further to those who are lost and helpless. Despite the pain and grief that I myself still carry around within me, I still believe in the healing, transformative power of art. That is why I write these posts at Amid Night Suns. That is why I make these videos. Because I love you, and I want you to know that you are not alone. No matter how heavy the burden of knowing secret things, no matter how agonizing the experience of loving my kith and kin, I will not stop. I have a woman in my life who loves me, and I cherish her with all my heart. I have family and friends that fortify me. I have purpose in my life now. I carry my burdens gladly, to know that I have such things. I hope these words reach out to you, and touch your heart. There is joy and magick even in sadness. We can help one another to lighten the load. Even in grief, together we can carry each other.

"Necessity brings him here, not pleasure."
Do not be afraid: our fate cannot be taken from us; it is a gift."
"Consider your origin: you were born not to live like brutes, but to follow virtue and knowledge."
Dante Alighieri -- Inferno, The Divine Comedy
Anyone familiar with the work I do here at Amid Night Suns will be aware that I am a fan of poetry, literature and various forms of mythology. They will also be aware that I believe art to be a powerful tool for the evolution of human consciousness. More than this though, I believe art to be the Oldest Magick – a process and system that predates all other forms of spellcraft.
Like standing up for what you believe in, art is not simply a pleasure – it is a necessity. I believe that human consciousness developed a capacity for art, story-telling and meaning-production because it literally had no other choice. It was simply a case of evolve or die. Find meaning in life’s endless brutalities, and solace in that meaning – however subjective – or suffer the consequences. But I also believe it goes much deeper than this. I believe that art is the twin of cognition. One cannot exist without the other. Art is considered, creative perception. Even animals make art. First and foremost they make it in the way they love and play and exist. It is an instinctive, embodied kind of art, and they may not be able to muse on its nature the way we humans do, but it is a lived art nonetheless. I hope people grasp the subtlety of what I’m suggesting here; that cognition itself has an imagining, combining faculty. This art-making function isn’t some accessory or afterthought of human consciousness; it is intrinsic. Mystics and visionaries have been giving us intimations of this idea for thousands of years. Artists have also been telling us much the same thing, whether explicitly or implicitly.
Art is a necessity. It always has been, but now more so than ever. This is because the controllers and rulers and manipulators of our world have declared a war on art and the human imagination. We are being colonised. Our consciousness is slowly but increasingly becoming pathology, and our realm is being reconstructed as a living hell. If you truly doubt this, take a look at the world around you and ask why, in the 21st century, is the gap between the Haves and have Nots continuing to widen? Why do western governments still utilize slave labour based on the exploitation of maintained third-world economies? Why does human trafficking and child abuse and all kinds of depravity still run rampant in our supposedly democratic, civilised world? When most of us think of hell we think of a cruel and depraved place filled with vice and sin.
We forget sometimes that this world, here and now, is far darker than most of us can bear to contemplate for more than a few moments. Sometimes we have to compartmentalize, shut off, ignore, or focus on brighter things. A truly full comprehension of the state of our world as far as injustice and cruelty goes would be simply too disturbing, and, more pointedly, debilitating. I understand that. Again, this is why art is a necessity. To make the darkness bearable. To shine a light, or gather and focus the light that does already exist in this world.
And there IS Light in this world, even amid the crippling darkness. For every horror there is an act of staggering beauty or compassion or grace. My point in all this is that there are various kinds of fire. Hell is often imagined as a place filled with fire – a fire that is used to torment. But fire can also warm and heal and quicken and empower.
I put my faith in the fire of what I call the Innermost Light – the fire of Love, Magick, Passion, Sex and Creativity. I believe in the inferno that exists within the heart of every lucid soul – a ferocious and unassailable connection to infinity, to the divine. I choose to believe that despite the horror that this world confronts us with every day, there is an alchemical furnace in each one of us -- just waiting for the right communion of art and science to transform us from what we are into what we have always secretly wanted to be. And we want to be meaningful. Truly, when all is said and done, most of us can accept our hardships; our mortality, our secret hidden grief, if we can manage to walk through this world with meaning in our hearts – and if we are able to share or stoke meaning with others. We don’t need to try moving mountains on our backs, or tearing down corrupt empires single-handedly. All we need to do is recognise our own power – who and what we truly are – and let that knowledge guide us towards attempting to leave the world in just slightly better shape than when we found it. Make no mistake, just this task alone requires a concerted effort and tenacity and courage, but it is not impossible. If enough of us do this – recognize who we truly are and then act on that Gnosis – the world is thus profoundly transformed. There will be people who will not want to share this effort, to help us collectively reach this critical mass, and so the world may seem just as dark and brutal and unjust as it ever was despite our best efforts. This shouldn’t sway us from acknowledging our true selves and then acting on such knowledge, should it? It is simply a choice between sanity and insanity, between love and disinterest. The Ragged Magi hope that you will choose Love and Sanity.
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Don’t be afraid to fail. Become a creator of meaning rather than a passive consumer of it. Express your insights and your wisdom, sharpen your intellect and discernment…show the world an inferno than is not based upon torment, but instead an inferno that has the fire of lucidity at its core. Hone yourself upon your Art, and become a practitioner of the Oldest Magick.

At Amid Night Suns I work very hard to present explorations of Lucidity, Acuity and Consciousness that are hopefully intelligent and nuanced. My goal on this blog is always to empower those that come here -- and to offer the possibility of a potentially transformative way of perceiving the world. For a long time I have been interested in pulsed frequencies, electromagnetism, encoded information and their possible hidden connections to the ill-understood secrets of our biology. I talk a lot on this blog about the Mysteries of the Imagination, but I do not think such mysteries are limited only to our private, psychic spaces. I think they extend also to our physical bodies. Furthermore, I think our bodies are explicit manifestations of these mysteries -- spiritual insights, geometries and secrets encoded into what we commonly refer to as deoxyribonucleic acid; DNA.
Does the reality of the body negate the reality of the imagination? Is one more 'real' than the other? I would argue that both must work in concert to create the human individual, that in fact they co-create each other. Most traditional materialists would maintain that, no, our physicality engineers our imagination as a biochemical illusion -- a side-effect of our neurophysiology and synaptic brain-function. As reasonable as this may seem at the outset, I believe this view to be incomplete at best.
It is my belief that DNA is, among other things, an incredibly sophisticated and powerful receiver/transmitter -- able to channel, house, decode and re-encode various kinds of information, usually in the form of modulated or pulsed frequencies. From an older post entitled Pulsed Frequencies, Physics and DNA - The Elusive Signal:
"A signal is a modulated or pulsed frequency. The manner in which it is pulsed or modulated is what defines that specific frequency as a signal; as in being under intelligent control – and this is what separates a ‘signal’ from the naturally occurring frequencies that fill the cosmos.
Now, if physical matter is a wave/particle situation as quantum physics suggests, and if all matter needs to oscillate and vibrate in order to maintain structural coherence – then this suggests that the entire physical universe is a realm of overlapping, interconnected pulsing frequencies, or signals. This makes sense in that we live within an ocean of electromagnetic energies. [...] Cutting-edge research in the fields of biochemistry provides enough circumstantial evidence to at least suggest that DNA itself makes use of pulsed frequencies in order to wind, unwind or recombine. This would make a certain kind of sense considering the wave/particle duality at the heart of all forms of matter. Other research suggests that genes and individual cells use protein-sleeves and membranes to sense incredibly subtle vibrations in order to transmit and receive chemicals.
Is DNA itself a ‘Signal’, a modulated pulsed frequency that collapses into a particle-reality of nucleic acid sequences? If so, is it consciousness that essentially governs this manifestation?
So, are we human beings actually a constellation of interpenetrated and interdependent signals, that in essence builds the matrix of our physical, emotional and imaginative presence? Are we signals interpreting signals? What kinds of strange magick are our brains and souls creating every single moment of our experiences?
Speaking of matrices, most of my readers will be familiar with the 'Matrix' movies, a cyberpunk-influenced trilogy that was massively successful and seemed to capture the cultural zeitgeist of the millennium. The Matrix movies are quite pardadoxical because they are on the one hand techno-phobic (the evil, enslaving Machine-Demiurge and its Agent-Archons), but they are also explicitly techno-fetishistic (the obvious glee taken in the cyberpunk aesthetics). What might we be able to glean from this? How does this influence our potential Gnosis? The Matrix movies feature cyberspace as the Gnostic Prison. It's a useful and undeniably resonant kind of imagery, but there is something deeper here.
Here's a fascinating quote from Christopher Knowles at The Secret Sun, discussing the writer and visionary William Gibson, from Knowles' post entitled Our Cyberpunk Reality, or Escaping the Prison Planet:
Gibson's Cyberspace wasn't the prison, it was the escape from the prison. It was a place of endless freedom and possibility. Which means, of course, that it was written long before the Internet was available to anyone outside of university computer labs by a guy who did his writing on a manual typewriter. [...] But Gibson's obsession with dislocation and created environments ties into the Gnostic desire to escape the Demiurge's world. Preferably into the Pleroma, but escape into a self-created world would surely be a nice consolation prize. And unlike the stereotypical image of the lone seeker often associated with Gnosticism (and common in Gibson's fiction), the deep feelings of alienation that the Gnostic harbor could also act as an epoxy for alternative community. Under the right conditions, at least.
I would hope that my work at Amid Night Suns helps anyone who comes here to battle these deep feelings of alienation. My blog is hopefully an example of an empowering self-created world existing in cyberspace -- a place of endless freedom and possibility more in keeping with Gibson's work than the dehumanizing cyber-prison of the Matrix movies.
In conclusion then, it is my belief that our DNA is, in a cyberpunk sense, the ultimate interface. Through its connection to the Raw Infinite from which it was generated I believe that we can utilize it to explore the Endless Vistas of the Unknown -- our bodies and imaginations working in concert to explore the Mysteries, to cultivate Gnosis, and to begin unraveling the most complex and fascinating questions concerning our existence. There are mysterious signals out there, transmitting to those sophisticated and nuanced enough to receive them -- signals that, I believe, can illuminate us with the Divine Fire that is our birthright and our destiny.

Right now, on the opening cusp of the 21st century, we the human race are living in a time that calls for Rebellion and Dissent and Difficult Questions Asked. We are living through a time in which the ability and desire for meaning-production is being engineered out of us through insidious forms of social gene-therapy. The centers of our stories are being brutally disemboweled. Our chymic weddings are being obliterated, or else sleight-of-handed from our immediate use. Hollow Form is replacing Fantastic Function. We are being tempted into a never-ending spiral of the most rampant apathy and mercenary mindsets. It is put upon the visionaries and artists and seekers to rebel against this internecine hegemony.
As I have stated here at Amid Night Suns once before, "I am not a mindless drone, I am not a zombie, I am not a hateful, selfish creature. I am Magi, Ragged. Is there a Warrior sleeping in you? Or is that Warrior already wide awake? Never lose faith in the majesty and ferocity of the human spirit. It is God, Love, Genius...it is the very essence of all of us. This is my declaration. This is the Rebellion."
And this rebellion that I speak of has more than a transient entertainment at its core. My work on this blog is geared towards more than simply helping those who come here to pass the time. My work is in service of a new kind of reign - a reign that has a warrior-spirit as its driving force. I don't take myself too seriously, but I take the work that I do here very seriously indeed. I take great care in crafting my words and my video-content in the hope that seeds will be planted, seeds that will then take root in some personally adaptive, empowering way.
"Love and Beauty and Passion are all worth fighting for. In times such as these we must love fiercely, we must perceive more keenly, and we must resist this War being waged on our minds. Bombs and guns can maim and kill, but the elites real weapons in this war are figurative. The control of association and context, sleight-of-hand, linguistic evasiveness, and a belief that we the people will sit by and do nothing - that we will pretend we do not see what is happening all around us. But I for one DO see, as I'm sure you do too."
In my own way I am attempting to act as an emissary for the Eye of Acuity. I am attempting to hold the Lucid Line, in order to stop our kith and kin from plunging from the Edge of the World. I believe in a Reign that has equality, truth-telling and brotherhood as its core principles. I believe in something other than this Acid Reign we are experiencing now -- a spiritually corrosive reign of elites, oligarchies and sociopaths.
I believe in a nourishing, healing and fearless reign -- an assemblage of individuals who are willing to ride, shoot straight and speak the truth -- for the betterment of us all. It's a huge manifesto for a little blog such as mine, but we all have to draw our lines in the sand. We all have to start somewhere. In the words of a great mage from the Infinite Myriad of Fiction, to those who seek to corrupt and enslave the human spirit: "YOU SHALL NOT PASS."
So, dear reader, I hope you will join me in helping make manifest the most noble aspects of our consciousness, through art and community and alchemy. It is a Great Working we are attempting here -- to spread Love, Insight and Empowerment as far and wide as we can, but it is needed now more than ever. Alone we are but One, but a Multitude is simply many individuals standing together.
Clench your fists, realize your power, and lift your eyes to the Reign.

As the regular readers of Amid Night Suns will be well aware, part of my manifesto on this blog is to provide an exploration of lucid, empowered darkness -- the empowerment that comes from having the courage to stare the shadow aspect of our psyches in the eye and to glean the insights they are trying to convey to us. As I have stated here before, it does us no good to ignore the darkness in the world and in our selves, and foolishly hope that such denial will bear the fruits of liberation. Freedom is not given, it is taken. True emancipation is a hard-won struggle against a myriad of social, economic, political and psychological factors. The oppressing, enslaving forces that that seek dominion over our precious little world are not going to relent -- as a single glance into the chaos of the early 21st century will immediately confirm. The elites and oligarchies who seek power over the imagination of the human race are always plotting and scheming - looking for any opportunity to turn our weaknesses or apathy to their advantage.
This being the case, the seekers and artists of this world have a responsibility to hold vigil over the potential fate of human consciousness. It is put upon us to fight for those too young, weak or wounded to fight for themselves. There are those who would turn away from the analogy of a war to describe the weave and turn of the human soul, but war is an apt analogy nonetheless. There are forces in and beyond this world -- both exotic and banal -- that have been attempting to crush the human spirit for thousands of years. Do you truly doubt this? The human race is locked in a war of culture, art and psyche; a war for our physical and spiritual health. Not much has changed since power-lusting kings first spilled the blood of innocents as offerings to their imagined gods.
But there are unseen beneficent forces sharing space and time with us; forces that have always countered such oppression. My regular readers will already be familiar with the Ragged Magi -- a tribe of hooded mystics, poets, artists and sorcerers who fight for the eventual liberation of all consciousness. They are here to hold the Lucid Line. I am one of these Ragged Magi. My name is Midnight. I am here to guide you through the Darkness -- and to help you find your way towards the Light. I am an Angel of Knives.
Do you believe that such a tribe of magickal warriors is nothing more than a silly artistic conceit? You would be wrong. Art permeates every level and layer of the manifest and un-manifest. It is the oldest alchemical secret -- that fiction is something far greater and far more profound than mere 'fantasy'. Storytelling is the original alchemical furnace. It is the place where true magick and true change is forged. Today many individuals think of fiction as little more than an escapist indulgence, but they are very wrong about this.
Stories live and breathe and shift and yearn just as we do. Do you doubt it? Storytelling can show you many secrets. But most importantly it can show you the nuances, subtleties and contexts of life and experience that would otherwise elude you. Some stories must be experienced many, many times before the full scope of their hidden places are revealed. I would hope that my work at Amid Night Suns helps you some way towards your ultimate destiny.
Remember, you are a Living Fiction clothed in chemical flesh. You are Freedom Incarnate. Let no man or supposed god tell you otherwise. The very heart of your being burns with the ferocity of the Innermost Light, the Midnight Sun. Your entire soul is a constellation of interconnected fictions, orbiting an infinite spark of divine light.
There is only one war worth fighting -- the War of Imagination. Never let apathy crush your spirit. Never fool yourself into believing that only villains stalk the Earth. Though you often cannot see them, heroes also move among you. There are angels on your shoulder, entities who fight the battles you cannot. Protect your Joy and your Love and your Insight. Share it with those closest to you, and know that there are those who battle daily on your behalf.
